I am a linguist and a Hungarian tutor. I love studying Hungarian, this is a lifelong project for me. I find it fascinating to examine how the language works now, and what potential it has in the future. My favourite part is language history that is full of secrets, and still, often answers our questions of ‘why’.
History of Hungarians through loan words
When there is a turning point in a nation’s life, this always brings changes in the language, too. Lexis is the the fastest changing part of a language. Loan words can tell us what Hungarians learnt from Iranian and from Turkish people before arriving at the Carpathians. After settling down, and giving up the nomadic lifestyle, Latin, Slavic, and German words helped Hungarians to name their new political system, the new religion, the new way of everyday life.
